Inside Optimism’s Superchain: Why Coinbase, Uniswap, Kraken, and Sony All Built on the OP Stack

How open-source modularity and shared governance created Ethereum City’s largest western quarter

Look west of downtown in Ethereum City and you will see the sprawling OP Stack / Superchain quarter. Alongside OP Mainnet sit Coinbase’s Base, Uniswap’s Unichain, Kraken’s Ink, Sony’s Soneium, and World Chain—all built from the same open-source blueprint.

1. The OP Stack: Turning Rollup Construction into Modular Open-Source Engineering

Launching a secure L2 once required years of custom cryptography and client engineering. With its Bedrock release, Optimism open-sourced the OP Stack under the MIT license as a clean, modular blueprint.

Teams could now adopt battle-tested execution, batching, and fault-proof components out of the box while customizing specific layers—such as Unichain’s 250ms sub-blocks or World Chain’s human-priority lane.

2. From Isolated Chains to a Unified Superchain

When dozens of L2s launch independently, liquidity and user experience fragment across incompatible bridges. The Superchain vision addresses fragmentation by binding OP Stack chains to shared security standards, a joint Security Council, and native cross-chain message passing.

Because member chains share identical state transition standards, upgrades like permissionless fault proofs (Stage 1) can roll out across Base, OP Mainnet, Unichain, and Ink with shared auditing.

3. The Economics of the Superchain Revenue Share

Why did Optimism give away its crown-jewel software for free? Chains that formally join the Superchain contribute the greater of 15% of net sequencer profit or 2.5% of gross sequencer revenue back to the Optimism Collective.

Those funds finance Retroactive Public Goods Funding (Retro Funding) and ongoing core protocol development, creating a self-reinforcing flywheel where every successful new OP Stack district strengthens the entire federation.

4. Exploring the Western Quarter in Ethereum City

In Ethereum City, the western Superchain quarter carries the heaviest daily vehicle traffic on the map—from Base’s bustling consumer apps to Unichain’s DeFi trading lanes and Soneium’s media storefronts.
