Base
Coinbase’s Superchain L2 and the city with the most daily transactions — consumer apps, social and payments cluster here.
Base is the L2 that the US exchange Coinbase opened in August 2023. It is built with Optimism’s OP Stack, and fees are paid in ETH.
By transaction count it is one of the busiest places in the Ethereum ecosystem, home to consumer apps, social, payments and memecoins. In 2025 it added permissionless fault proofs and reached Stage 1 on L2BEAT.
Base’s greatest strength lies in serving as a direct bridge between Coinbase’s massive retail user base and the on-chain economy. Through passkey-based Smart Wallets and seamless USDC rails, it lets everyday users interact with decentralized apps without wrestling with seed phrases or complex gas calculations.
In terms of economics and governance, Base issues no native token of its own, collects all execution fees in ETH, and contributes a share of its sequencer revenue back to the Optimism Collective to fund public goods. Anchored by native liquidity hubs like Aerodrome and social ecosystems such as Farcaster, it has grown into the leading L2 for consumer finance, payments, and creator apps.
