OP Mainnet
Home of the Superchain. The original L2 by Optimism, creator of the OP Stack; the blueprints for the other OP Stack towns came from here.
OP Mainnet is the optimistic rollup Optimism opened in 2021 and the original of the OP Stack that many chains now use. Its governance token, OP, launched in 2022.
The group of chains built with the OP Stack is called the Superchain; Base, Unichain, Ink, Soneium and World Chain all belong to it. Permissionless fault proofs have been live since 2024.
OP Mainnet goes beyond running a single Layer 2 network: it serves as the flagship and testing ground for the MIT-licensed OP Stack and the broader Superchain vision. Networks such as Base, Unichain, Ink, Soneium, and World Chain all share this codebase, working toward native cross-chain interoperability where assets and messages move across OP Stack chains without traditional bridge friction.
Optimism has also pioneered Retroactive Public Goods Funding (Retro Funding) under the principle that impact should equal profit. By channeling sequencer revenues back to open-source developers, infrastructure maintainers, and educators across Ethereum, it has built a sustainable governance model for funding ecosystem public goods.
