Berachain

Mainnet since February 2025. An EVM L1 that hands out validator power in proportion to liquidity provided (“Proof of Liquidity”). Third-party bridges connect it to Ethereum.

Berachain is an EVM L1 whose mainnet opened in February 2025. Execution is the same EVM as Ethereum, but consensus runs on its own BeaconKit framework, and its signature idea is “Proof of Liquidity”, which hands validator power to those who provide liquidity.

It has three tokens: BERA for gas, the non-transferable governance token BGT, and the stablecoin HONEY. Third-party bridges connect it to Ethereum.

Traditional Proof-of-Stake networks suffer from a liquidity paradox: tokens locked up to secure validators cannot simultaneously provide liquidity in DeFi. Berachain solves this with Proof of Liquidity (PoL), directing block rewards toward users who supply active liquidity to on-chain applications.

Operating a tri-token model (BERA for gas, non-transferable BGT for governance and rewards, and HONEY as a native stablecoin) atop its BeaconKit EVM engine, Berachain aligns validators directly with protocol liquidity.
