From Proof of Stake to Proof of Liquidity (PoL): Inside Berachain’s Tri-Token Economy

Why Berachain split gas (BERA), non-transferable governance (BGT), and stablecoin settlement (HONEY)

In a standard Proof-of-Stake chain, locking tokens with validators secures consensus but drains liquidity away from the chain’s own DEXs and lending pools. Berachain, live since February 2025, addresses this tension through Proof of Liquidity (PoL) and a three-token model.

1. The PoS Liquidity Dilemma: Security vs. Working Capital

When a single token serves as both validator stake and DeFi collateral, high staking yields starve on-chain applications of liquidity. Berachain separates these roles across three distinct assets.

2. BERA, BGT, and HONEY: Three Tokens with Distinct Jobs

BERA pays gas fees and serves as validator bond; BGT (Bera Governance Token) is a non-transferable (soulbound) governance and reward token that can be burned 1:1 into BERA but never bought on the open market; and HONEY is the native dollar-pegged stablecoin.

3. How Proof of Liquidity Routes Block Rewards Through DeFi Vaults

Instead of paying block emissions directly to passive stakers, validators direct newly minted BGT into approved Reward Vaults across DEX pools and lending markets. Only users who actively provide liquidity to the chain’s economy earn BGT—and delegate it back to validators.

4. Comparing Liquidity-First Designs: Berachain and Katana

While Berachain aligns liquidity through consensus rewards on its harbor island, Katana in the northern quarter concentrates liquidity by routing bridge reserve yield back to core DeFi users.
