Account Abstraction (ERC-4337 & EIP-7702): Smart Wallets Without 12-Word Seed Phrases
How passkeys, gas fee coverage, and batch transactions make on-chain apps feel like the everyday web
For years, onboarding to crypto meant writing down a 12-word seed phrase that could never be recovered if lost, and buying ETH just to pay gas to send USDC. Account Abstraction removes both hurdles by turning rigid keypair accounts into programmable smart accounts.
1. The Limits of Traditional Externally Owned Accounts (EOAs)
Historically, user wallets on Ethereum were Externally Owned Accounts (EOAs) controlled by a single secp256k1 private key. Lose the key and your funds are gone forever; expose the key and everything is drained. Moreover, EOAs cannot batch ‘Approve + Swap’ into one click and can only pay gas in the chain’s native token.
2. ERC-4337 and Paymasters: Paying Gas in Stablecoins—or Not Paying at All
ERC-4337 brought smart contract wallets to Ethereum and L2s via an alternative mempool of UserOperations and a new actor called a Paymaster. A Paymaster can cover gas fees entirely on a user’s behalf or accept ERC-20 stablecoins like USDC or USDT in exchange for paying the network’s native gas.
In Ethereum City, districts like Celo allow stablecoin gas payments directly at the protocol level, while Plasma covers basic USDT transfers so everyday payments cost users nothing.
3. Passkeys, Native AA on ZK Chains, and Pectra’s EIP-7702
Smart accounts can verify signatures using device passkeys (Face ID / Touch ID) rather than seed phrases. Starknet, ZKsync Era, and Abstract built account abstraction natively into their protocols, while Base popularized passkey smart wallets across the Superchain.
In May 2025, Ethereum’s Pectra upgrade shipped EIP-7702, allowing existing EOA addresses to delegate execution to smart contract code—bringing transaction batching, spending limits, and gas fee coverage to standard wallets without migrating addresses.
4. Why Invisible Wallets Matter for Ethereum City’s Growth
As ERC-4337 and EIP-7702 become universal, citizens can interact with games, social apps, and DeFi shops across districts without worrying about seed phrases or native gas balances.
