Sonic is an EVM L1 launched in December 2024 as the successor of Fantom. FTM tokens became S tokens one for one, and it advertises sub-second finality.
Its own bridge, the Sonic Gateway, links it to Ethereum, with a fail-safe that lets users reclaim deposits on Ethereum if the bridge stops for 14 days. It also returns part of the fees an app generates to its developers. Gas is paid in S.
Sonic is the high-performance successor to Fantom Opera, rebuilt from the ground up with a custom database and execution engine to deliver sub-second finality for DeFi users.
Its standout economic feature, Fee Monetization (FeeM), rebates up to 90% of the network gas fees generated by an application directly back to the developers who built it.
