Avalanche

An independent L1 whose C-Chain runs Ethereum apps on the EVM. The official Avalanche Bridge moves assets to and from Ethereum.

Avalanche is an independent L1 opened by Ava Labs in September 2020. What this city shows is its C-Chain, which runs the EVM, so Ethereum apps work as-is. Its “Avalanche consensus” finalizes transactions within a second or two.

The official Avalanche Bridge moves assets to and from Ethereum, and the network can spin up many independent chains called subnets (Avalanche L1s). A December 2024 upgrade cut fees sharply. Gas is paid in AVAX.

Avalanche uses repeated random sub-sampling among validators to reach irreversible finality in roughly one to two seconds. Its C-Chain—represented as an island in Ethereum City—runs standard EVM smart contracts.

Beyond the C-Chain, Avalanche’s subnet (Avalanche L1) architecture lets institutions and gaming studios launch custom, sovereign blockchains with their own compliance rules and gas tokens.
