Ronin
The game chain of Axie Infinity. In May 2026 it moved from an independent sidechain to an OP Stack Ethereum L2 (an optimium). Gas is paid in RON.
Ronin was opened in February 2021 by the game studio Sky Mavis for Axie Infinity. It is also known for the March 2022 bridge hack that drained about $600 million, after which its validator set was overhauled.
On 12 May 2026 it moved from an independent sidechain to an OP Stack Ethereum L2. Transaction data goes to EigenDA rather than Ethereum (an optimium), and L2BEAT notes that its fault proofs do not yet work properly. Gas is paid in RON.
Ronin is the home network of Web3 gaming hits like Axie Infinity and Pixels. Originally launched as a permissioned sidechain to achieve low fees for gamers, it overhauled its security model following its historic 2022 bridge exploit.
With the maturity of Ethereum rollups, Ronin completed its migration from an independent sidechain to an OP Stack Ethereum L2 in May 2026—retaining its RON gas token and gaming-focused wallet stack while rejoining the Ethereum L2 ecosystem.
