Lighter (LIT): Token of a Perpetuals Exchange on a ZK Rollup

A zero-fee decentralized derivatives exchange on Ethereum

LIT is the token of Lighter, a decentralized perpetual-futures exchange built as a zero-knowledge rollup on Ethereum. It was first distributed through an airdrop on 30 December 2025, and its clearly confirmed use so far is staking.

1. A zero-fee decentralized futures exchange

Lighter, founded by former Citadel employee Vladimir Novakovski, is a decentralized exchange on Ethereum for perpetual futures (derivatives with no expiry that let traders bet on price moves). It advertises zero trading fees, and trading began in earnest in autumn 2025. A funding round led by Founders Fund and Ribbit Capital included Robinhood.

LIT has a maximum supply of 1 billion. On the Crypto Nation map, LIT stands in Ethereum City (the capital), because it was first issued on Ethereum.

2. How a ZK rollup proves trades

With no expiry, perpetuals typically have longs (bets on a rise) and shorts (bets on a fall) pay each other a ‘funding’ fee that keeps the contract near the spot price. Lighter runs on a purpose-built ZK rollup that processes trades outside Ethereum and posts a zero-knowledge proof (a mathematical certificate that results were computed correctly, without redoing them) to Ethereum for verification. Because Ethereum checks the proof, the operator is said to be unable to change balances arbitrarily.

LIT’s uses are still narrow. Staking (locking tokens for a period) began in January 2026, as did a buyback (the project purchasing its own token) funded by trading fees. After a policy change on 30 June 2026, repurchased LIT is permanently burned (removed from circulation), with the first burn on 10 July.

3. Token split and key dates

Of the 1 billion, 25% went to the airdrop unlocked, 26% to the team, 24% to investors and 25% to the ecosystem and reserve. Team and investor tokens unlock after a one-year cliff (a waiting period with no releases) ending 27 December 2026, then vest evenly over three years, while the ecosystem and reserve have no published schedule.

Key dates: trading from autumn 2025, the airdrop on 30 December 2025, staking and buybacks in January 2026, and the first burn on 10 July 2026. One research report says Robinhood, an early investor and distribution partner, began offering Lighter’s perpetuals in its wallet on 1 July 2026.

4. Things to know

Perpetual futures are often traded with leverage (borrowed money), so small price moves can wipe out a position or trigger forced liquidation (the exchange closing a position when collateral runs short). The zero-knowledge design does not remove that risk, and errors in server operations, the proof circuits (programs that generate the proofs) or smart contracts are further risks.

Beyond staking, LIT’s use is not clearly defined, and any governance rights should be checked. With half the supply held by team and investors, unlocks after late December 2026 may affect the market. Whether ‘zero fees’ covers every user and product should be checked in official documents, and the company can change fee and buyback policies. Derivatives exchanges also face heavy regulation.
