LayerZero (ZRO): The Token of a Cross-Chain Messaging Protocol

Cross-chain messaging where apps pick their own security

LayerZero (ZRO) is the token of LayerZero, an interoperability protocol that lets smart contracts on different blockchains send each other messages. Its developer, LayerZero Labs, began in 2021 and ZRO launched in June 2024, with a total supply fixed at 1 billion.

1. A messaging protocol linking chains

Blockchains are like separate islands, so apps on different chains cannot easily talk. LayerZero is an ‘omnichain’ protocol that delivers a message sent by a contract on one chain to a contract on another. LayerZero Labs, led by co-founder Bryan Pellegrino, started in 2021.

On the Crypto Nation map, ZRO stands in Ethereum City (the capital), because it was first issued on Ethereum. It is designed to be usable on other chains through LayerZero’s own token standard.

2. Endpoints, verifiers and executors

Each chain hosts a LayerZero smart contract called an ‘endpoint’, the gateway for messages. When an app sends a message, a Decentralized Verifier Network (DVN) checks that it really came from the source chain, and an ‘executor’ delivers it on the destination chain.

A key feature is that each app chooses its own security setup, such as which verifiers to use and how many must agree; outside organizations like Google Cloud are reported to act as DVNs. For tokens there is the OFT (omnichain fungible token) standard, which burns or locks tokens on one chain and mints or releases them on another, keeping a single total supply.

3. Where it is used, and key dates

LayerZero is used to move tokens between chains, issue stablecoins on many chains and run DeFi apps that span them. Stargate, an early flagship app that moves assets through shared liquidity pools, appeared in 2022, and multi-chain stablecoins such as Tether’s USDT0 use the OFT standard.

Key dates are the 2021 founding, the 2022 mainnet, version 2 in early 2024, and the launch of ZRO with its airdrop (free distribution) on 20 June 2024. Claiming used a ‘Proof of Donation’ model, in which claimants donated a small amount per ZRO, and a Sybil process (one person’s many accounts built to farm rewards) invited self-reports and tips.

4. Things to know

Letting apps choose their security is also a weakness. An app using one verifier or a weak setup may be easier to attack, and cross-chain infrastructure has often been a hacking target. The field is crowded, with rivals such as Chainlink CCIP, Wormhole and Axelar.

The airdrop drew controversy over Sybil hunting and the donation model, and only part of the supply circulated at first, with the rest released on a schedule. ZRO is designed for protocol fees and governance, but whether fees are collected and how they are used depends on governance decisions. The protocol keeps changing, so current settings should be checked in official documents.
