BFUSD: Binance’s Reward-Bearing Margin Asset That Lives Off-Chain
An internal Binance asset, not a stablecoin
BFUSD is a ‘reward-bearing margin asset’ that Binance, one of the world’s largest crypto exchanges, launched for futures users in November 2024. Its name suggests a dollar stablecoin, but Binance says it is not one.
1. A margin asset made by Binance
Binance, which opened in 2017 and also runs a large futures market, announced BFUSD on 26 November 2024 and opened it on the 27th. Margin is the collateral posted for futures trading, and BFUSD serves as margin while earning rewards. At launch it could be bought and redeemed only with Tether’s USDT, and only by eligible Binance futures users.
The key point is that BFUSD is not a token on any blockchain. Binance says it is not a stablecoin because it cannot be withdrawn from a futures account or traded on the open market. On the Crypto Nation map, BFUSD stands in the Frontier Province, because no blockchain issues it and it fits no chain’s city.
2. Where the rewards come from
Binance names two sources. One is a ‘delta-neutral’ trade: buying coins on the spot market while selling the same amount in futures so price moves cancel out, and collecting funding fees, the payments that keep futures prices in line with spot. The other is Ethereum staking rewards.
Binance keeps a reserve fund for periods when funding fees turn negative, and says rewards will not fall below zero. The rate changes with the market and is not fixed interest, and the promise rests on the fund being large enough. The structure is often compared with Ethena’s USDe, but Binance says BFUSD is different.
3. Uses and milestones
BFUSD’s main use is futures margin, pitched on the idea that collateral should not sit idle. Binance’s Simple Earn developer notes show BFUSD entries added in October 2025 and subscription-quota details changed in March 2026.
When high early rates were publicized, some compared BFUSD with Terra’s UST, which collapsed in 2022, and Binance drew a line by saying it is not a stablecoin. Regional limits apply; for example, US users cannot use Binance futures.
4. Things to know
BFUSD’s safety rests entirely on one company. Reserves and trading cannot be checked directly on a blockchain, and if the exchange ran into trouble, rewards and even redemption could be affected. Because it cannot leave the exchange, a suspended account or ended service would cut off access. Binance reached a large settlement with US authorities in November 2023 over anti-money-laundering failures, so regulation matters too.
Funding fees, the main source of rewards, can shrink or turn negative in weak markets, and delta-neutral strategies are not risk-free in sharp swings. Binance can change terms and limits, so check its official notices.
