Theta Network (THETA): From Video Delivery Toward AI Computing

Began with video delivery, now leaning toward AI compute

Theta Network is a layer 1 blockchain that began as a way to deliver streaming video more cheaply, and THETA is its native coin. It has recently widened toward EdgeCloud, a platform pooling spare computers for AI work.

1. Started with video delivery

Theta Network was built by the blockchain developer Theta Labs, and its mainnet (the live version of the chain) opened in 2019. The original goal was to cut video delivery costs by letting viewers share spare internet bandwidth.

On the Crypto Nation map, THETA is the city-hall tower of the Theta Network neighbourhood in Mainnet Province, because it is that chain’s own coin. The chain’s second coin, TFUEL, is a companion used for fees and rewards.

2. Two coins and several kinds of nodes

The Theta blockchain uses proof of stake (validators lock up coins to confirm transactions) and is described as compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine, so it can run Ethereum-style smart contracts. THETA has a fixed total supply of 1 billion and is used for staking and governance votes. Enterprise validators (large operators that produce and check blocks) stake THETA and earn TFUEL for processing transactions.

TFUEL serves as the chain’s ‘gas’ (the usage fee) and pays edge node operators for their work. Anyone can run an edge node by downloading software and sharing their computer’s bandwidth or GPU power, which is pooled for video delivery or AI computing.

3. Uses and milestones

Theta names companies such as Samsung, Sony, Deutsche Telekom and NTT Digital as validators or partners, though sources differ on who takes part and how. After starting with video streaming, the chain widened into areas such as the NFT marketplace Theta Drop and smart contracts.

More recently it has turned toward AI. Theta describes EdgeCloud as a hybrid cloud platform that runs AI and compute-heavy work on a distributed GPU network, and says it supports NVIDIA H100 and H200 GPUs in 2026. Its 2026 roadmap lists more AI agents, a revived TDROP 2.0 token and a push toward telecom companies.

4. Things to know

According to a December 2025 report, two former senior executives of Theta Labs filed separate whistleblower suits in a Los Angeles court against the company and its chief executive. The complaints allege misleading partnership claims, undisclosed insider token sales and NFT marketplace abuses; these are the plaintiffs’ allegations, not court findings. The report carried no company response, so the latest status should be checked separately.

Validator seats concentrated among a few companies are cited as a decentralization weakness. It also competes with decentralized GPU services such as Render and Akash, large cloud companies and established video delivery networks. Usage and partnership results mostly come from the project itself, and token prices can swing sharply.
