USDD: TRON’s Dollar Coin, From Algorithmic Toward Collateral
A 2022 stablecoin that added collateral and swap tools
USDD is a dollar-pegged stablecoin launched in May 2022 in the TRON ecosystem, issued and managed by the TRON DAO Reserve. It was first pitched as algorithmic, but has since leaned more on collateral.
1. A dollar coin issued by the TRON DAO Reserve
USDD began on TRON in May 2022 as a stablecoin, a coin that tries to hold a value of one US dollar. Its issuer is the TRON DAO Reserve, an organization supporting the TRON ecosystem, and TRON’s founder Justin Sun has been its public face. At launch the core mechanism was an algorithm that burned and minted TRON’s coin TRX to hold the peg.
On the Crypto Nation map, USDD stands in TRON City, because it was first issued on TRON. Most of it lives on TRON, and connected versions were also built for other blockchains such as Ethereum and BNB Chain.
2. Holding the peg with collateral and swap tools
The TRON DAO Reserve says it holds reserves of other stablecoins such as USDT and USDC, bitcoin (BTC) and TRX behind USDD. It advertises over-collateralization, meaning more assets than the coins issued, and publishes its holdings on a website. After the price slipped below one dollar in June 2022, it said it raised the collateral considerably.
A later overhaul known as ‘USDD 2.0’ moved the design further toward collateral. A peg stability module (PSM) lets holders swap USDD for other dollar coins within set limits, and a savings token, sUSDD, pays interest to depositors. The exact reserve mix changes over time, so the official holdings disclosure is the place to check.
3. Uses and milestones
USDD is used for trading and deposits in TRON’s lending and exchange services such as JustLend and SunSwap, and on exchanges. TRON is a chain where Tether’s USDT circulates heavily, and USDD sits among the dollar coins used there.
The main milestones are the May 2022 launch, the price dip and collateral increase that June, and later redesigns of the structure. Accounts of the period also describe a milder slip below one dollar for some weeks in early 2023.
4. Things to know
Because reserves include TRX, a coin from the same ecosystem, collateral value can fall together with TRX in a market slump. The reserve is run by one organization and mostly reported through its own disclosures, so how far outsiders verify it regularly is worth checking.
The PSM has limits and waiting times, so not everyone can swap at once in a sudden panic. USDD on Ethereum and BNB Chain is a bridged form of the TRON coin, which adds bridge risk. Its history of price slips, the large influence of one person, and stablecoin rules that increasingly demand strict reserves and transparency are also worth knowing.
