SUN: The Governance Token of Sun.io, TRON’s All-in-One DeFi Hub

From a ‘social experiment’ to SunSwap and SunPump on TRON

SUN is the token of Sun.io, an all-in-one decentralized finance (DeFi) platform on the TRON blockchain, used for governance and rewards on the exchange SunSwap. It is tied by revenue to the meme-coin launchpad SunPump, and belongs to an ecosystem close to TRON founder Justin Sun.

1. TRON’s DeFi hub that began as a ‘social experiment’

Sun.io is described as an all-in-one DeFi platform on TRON offering trading, stablecoin swaps and liquidity mining (earning rewards for supplying funds). Named after TRON creator Justin Sun, it is said to have begun as a community-driven ‘social experiment’. It promoted a ‘fair launch’: tokens were handed out through mining, not given to venture investors in advance.

In October 2021 it acquired the TRON exchange JustSwap, grew it into SunSwap and announced a roadmap to make SUN the platform’s governance token. On the Crypto Nation map, SUN stands in TRON City, because TRON is where the coin was first issued. Total supply is about 19.9 billion, mostly shared with the community through mining and staking, with a reserve for the SUN DAO (a vote-run community group).

2. SunSwap, stablecoin swaps and SunPump

SunSwap is an automated market maker (AMM) exchange: people deposit two coins in a pool (a store of funds), a formula sets the price, and trading fees go to depositors. Version 3 added ‘concentrated liquidity’, letting providers place funds in chosen price ranges only. A stablecoin swap handles like-valued coins such as USDT, USDC and USDD with little slippage (price impact of the trade itself).

Locking SUN for a period creates ‘veSUN’, giving votes on pool rewards, a share of stablecoin-pool fees and up to a 2.5x boost on mining rewards. Part of SunSwap and SunPump revenue is described as buying back and burning SUN (purchasing and destroying it). A 1-to-1,000 redenomination produced ‘New SUN’.

3. Where it is used, and what happened

SUN serves for rewards and governance (votes on how the platform is run), and users lock it for fee benefits and reward boosts. The platform has a Peg Stability Module (PSM), which supports the stablecoin USDD’s peg through fee-free 1:1 swaps.

In August 2024 SunPump went live, a launchpad where anyone can create and trade meme coins, with part of its revenue linked to SUN buybacks. With SunSwap (2021) and SunPump, Sun.io spans exchange, stablecoin swaps and meme-coin launches.

4. Things to know

SUN is described as deeply integrated into TRON DAO and tied to Justin Sun’s wider ecosystem, including the HTX and Poloniex exchanges, so the project’s direction may depend heavily on a few decision-makers. Despite the ‘fair launch’ label, actual holdings and team or foundation allocations should be checked directly.

Meme-coin platforms like SunPump can host many worthless or scam tokens (so-called rug pulls), and if the meme-coin boom cools, SUN’s usefulness and income may shrink with it. Smart-contract bugs (errors in self-running programs) and ordinary DeFi risks apply too.
