XPL: The Coin of Plasma, a Layer-1 Chain for Stablecoin Payments

A Bitfinex-backed stablecoin chain that launched in 2025

XPL is the own coin of Plasma, a layer 1 blockchain built for dollar stablecoin payments, especially Tether’s USDT. It debuted with a mainnet beta in September 2025, so its track record is short and many planned features lie ahead.

1. A layer 1 built from scratch for stablecoins

Plasma is an independent layer 1 blockchain that runs Ethereum-style smart contracts (self-running programs), focused on stablecoin (dollar-pegged coin) transfers. Led by CEO Paul Faecks, it raised money through an early round led by Framework and Bitfinex (Tether’s sister company) in February 2025, Founders Fund in May and a public sale in July. Its stated aim is digital-dollar payments, remittances and merchant adoption.

XPL is Plasma’s own coin, designed for validator rewards (validators check blocks), staking (locking coins to protect the network) and governance. On the Crypto Nation map, XPL stands in Mainnet Province as the city-hall tower of the Plasma chain, because it is a blockchain’s own coin. It started with 10 billion coins and, as described, has no fixed maximum.

2. Fee-free USDT transfers and fast consensus

Its consensus (how validators agree on blocks) is PlasmaBFT, a leader-based design inspired by Fast HotStuff that aims for finality in about a second. Ethereum compatibility (EVM) lets Solidity contracts move over largely unchanged. The headline feature is ‘zero-fee’ transfers: the network pays the fee on standard USDT transfers up to a set size, and fees can also be paid in assets such as USDT or BTC.

It also planned ‘Bitcoin anchoring’, periodically recording the chain’s state on Bitcoin; this works like a notary and does not mean inheriting Bitcoin’s security. The pre-launch roadmap had these checkpoints starting in early 2026 and a wider validator set by the end of 2026.

3. Where it is used, and what happened

The mainnet beta and XPL launched together on 25 September 2025, with 100-plus DeFi (decentralized finance) partners, including Aave, Ethena, Fluid and Euler, expected at launch. In 2026 payment firms and DeFi apps are described as connecting, but Plasma is still small next to established USDT chains such as Tron.

In September 2025 Plasma also announced Plasma One, a stablecoin-focused neobank (an app-based, bank-like service) offering cards, savings, transfers and payments in one app. Separately, from February 2026 new XPL is released as validator rewards, so supply grows over time.

4. Things to know

Analysts note that the launch validator set was small and close to Tether’s ecosystem, so decentralization remains ahead. The chain leans heavily on one issuer, USDT, so regulatory or trust problems at Tether could reach Plasma. Zero-fee transfers are paid by the protocol, leaving open how that is sustained.

Only part of XPL’s supply was tradable at launch, and validator rewards can add more. US public-sale participants had their tokens delayed by a year. Many roadmap items depend on partners and audits, so plans and progress should be checked against official sources.
