FLOKI: A Viking-Themed Meme Coin Named After Elon Musk’s Dog

A meme token that grew into games and token tools

FLOKI is a meme coin (a coin built on internet culture) that started on Ethereum in 2021 and took its name from Elon Musk’s Shiba Inu puppy. It now promotes games and token tools, but its value still rests on community attention.

1. A meme born from a puppy’s name

FLOKI launched around June 2021 on Ethereum, named after the Shiba Inu puppy ‘Floki’ that Elon Musk had mentioned on social media, with a Viking-helmeted dog as its mascot. It arrived during the craze for dog-themed coins like Dogecoin and Shiba Inu, and its early developers are reported to have been anonymous.

The token is an ordinary ERC-20 (Ethereum’s standard token format) token, and a same-named token later appeared on BNB Smart Chain. On the Crypto Nation map, FLOKI stands in Ethereum City, because it was first issued on Ethereum. Its main feature is a community, not new technology.

2. Adding services to a meme

The Floki team says it has added uses to the token. The best known is Valhalla, a Viking-themed online game that uses NFTs (digital collectibles) and tokens. Others include FlokiFi Locker, which locks tokens so developers cannot sell them all at once, an education site called Floki University, and an NFT marketplace.

In early 2024 the team launched TokenFi, a platform for creating tokens and tokenizing real-world assets, with its own token, TOKEN. The team describes benefits for FLOKI holders, but each service is structured differently, so actual FLOKI use must be checked separately.

3. Uses and milestones

FLOKI is mostly traded and held within its community and used in the team’s own services. After its June 2021 launch it became widely known through listings and heavy advertising. In early 2022 the UK advertising regulator (ASA) banned a poster urging people who had ‘missed Dogecoin’ to buy FLOKI, saying it trivialised investment.

Valhalla was delayed several times, and reports said its mainnet (the live version) was released around mid-2025. Because FLOKI trades on several chains, moving it between them needs bridges (cross-chain transfer services).

4. Things to know

Meme coins have no earnings or assets behind them, and attention can fade fast when online moods change, and large holders’ trades can move prices. Whether the team’s services win many users is a separate question, and Valhalla shows schedules can slip. Heavy advertising has also drawn regulators’ attention, as the UK ruling showed.

The anonymity of early developers and tokens spread across several chains call for caution. Popular meme coins attract fake tokens and impersonation scams, so contract addresses should be checked against official sources, as should any holder benefits the team promises. Rules on meme-coin promotion keep changing, and access to services can differ by region.
