Filecoin (FIL): A Network for Renting Out Spare Storage
Protocol Labs’ blockchain-based decentralized data storage
Filecoin (FIL) is the native coin of Filecoin, a decentralized storage network that pools spare disk space from around the world. Users pay in FIL to store data, and providers earn FIL by proving they really hold it.
1. A storage blockchain from Protocol Labs
Filecoin was created by Protocol Labs, led by Juan Benet, which also built IPFS, a way of finding files by their content rather than their location. Filecoin adds an economic layer meant to guarantee that stored data stays stored. A 2017 token sale raised what was then a record sum, and the mainnet launched on 15 October 2020.
On the Crypto Nation map, FIL is the city-hall tower of the Filecoin district in Mainnet Province, because it is the chain’s own coin. Supply was designed with a cap of 2 billion, and more than half is released to storage providers as block rewards.
2. Proving that data is stored
Storage providers (once called miners) offer disk space and lock up FIL as collateral. After receiving data they run heavy computation, called sealing, to produce a proof of replication, then must submit proofs of spacetime at regular intervals showing the data is intact. Missed proofs cost them part of their collateral.
Users make storage deals in FIL, recorded on the Filecoin blockchain. The Filecoin Virtual Machine (FVM), live since March 2023, lets Ethereum-style smart contracts run on the network, and the ‘Filecoin Plus’ programme has boosted rewards for verified, useful data.
3. Where it is used, and key dates
Filecoin is used for archives of large datasets, public-interest data, and long-term preservation of web and NFT files. Since 2025 it has leaned toward an ‘Onchain Cloud’ that bundles payments (Filecoin Pay), IPFS-linked storage (Filecoin Pin) and a warm-storage service.
Key dates: mainnet in October 2020, the FVM in March 2023, and a February 2026 strategy shifting focus from adding supply to growing paid demand. Community sources say Onchain Cloud reached mainnet in early 2026 and an S3-compatible product, Fil One, followed in June.
4. Things to know
The central challenge is real paid demand. Early incentives rewarded adding capacity, critics said much stored data existed to earn rewards, and the 2026 strategy itself moves the focus from supply to demand. The network also competes with traditional clouds such as Amazon S3 and with other decentralized storage projects.
On the token side, vesting (gradual release) of Protocol Labs’ and the Foundation’s shares ended on 15 October 2026 as scheduled, so block rewards become the main source of new FIL. A proposal called Solstice would tie part of block rewards to paid usage but is not yet scheduled for an upgrade. Running a provider also takes costly hardware and collateral.
