Aptos (APT): The Move-Language Chain Built by Meta’s Diem Alumni
Parallel execution, a 2022 mainnet and tokenized funds
Aptos is a blockchain founded by developers from Diem, the digital-currency project of Meta (formerly Facebook); its mainnet opened in October 2022. It promotes speed through the Move programming language and parallel execution of transactions.
1. Who built it
Aptos Labs was founded by Mo Shaikh and Avery Ching, who had led work on Meta’s Diem and Novi projects. Diem folded amid regulatory opposition, but its technology lived on in Aptos. In 2022 the company raised large sums from investors including a16z, and on 17 October that year the mainnet and the native coin APT launched. Since late 2024 co-founder Avery Ching has been chief executive.
APT pays transaction fees (gas) and is used for staking (locking coins to secure the network) and governance votes. It started with 1 billion tokens, with staking rewards issuing new coins over time. On the Crypto Nation map, APT is the city-hall tower of the Aptos neighbourhood in the Mainnet Province, because it is the chain’s own coin.
2. Move and parallel execution
Move, created for Diem, treats assets such as tokens as ‘resources’ that cannot be copied or accidentally destroyed, to prevent common coding mistakes. Aptos built its account and token standards and smart-contract environment on it.
A core technology is Block-STM, a parallel execution engine: it runs transactions simultaneously, then re-executes only those that conflict, using many CPU cores at once. Consensus builds on a Byzantine fault tolerant (BFT) design from Diem, which keeps agreement even if some participants fail or cheat, and aims to finalize blocks in about a second.
3. Uses and milestones
Aptos hosts decentralized exchanges, lending services, stablecoins and payment apps, and both Tether (USDT) and Circle (USDC) issue directly on the chain. In 2024 institutional assets arrived, including BlackRock’s tokenized fund BUIDL and Franklin Templeton’s money market fund token, raising its profile in real-world-asset tokenization.
It also introduced ‘keyless accounts’, which create a wallet from an existing login such as email, so users need not manage a secret key or recovery phrase. In 2025 the US asset manager Bitwise filed for a spot Aptos ETF, widening ties with traditional finance.
4. Things to know
Having raised large sums before launch, Aptos has big allocations for investors, the team and the foundation, and scheduled unlocks of those tokens draw market attention. At its 2022 launch it was criticized for disclosing token distribution late and for early throughput below its marketing.
Competition among high-performance L1s, including Sui, which also uses Move, is intense, so attracting real users and apps is a constant challenge. Validator numbers and stake distribution, the foundation’s use of ecosystem funds and changes to supply policy are worth watching, and performance claims are best checked against real-world use.
