EigenLayer (EIGEN): From Restaking to a ‘Verifiable Cloud’
Reusing Ethereum’s stake, now rebranded as EigenCloud
EigenLayer is a ‘restaking’ protocol that lets stake locked on Ethereum also secure other services, and EIGEN is its token. In 2025 its developer Eigen Labs rebranded it EigenCloud and widened its aim to a ‘verifiable cloud’.
1. The idea of reusing Ethereum’s security
EigenLayer was built by Eigen Labs, led by University of Washington professor Sreeram Kannan. Its core idea, ‘restaking’, lets people who stake ETH on Ethereum (lock it up to help validate) reuse the same collateral to secure other services. A new service can borrow Ethereum’s collateral instead of recruiting its own validators.
The EIGEN token began trading at the end of September 2024, when transfers opened and a first airdrop took place. On the Crypto Nation map, EIGEN stands in Ethereum City, because it was first issued on Ethereum. It is an ERC-20 token designed, separately from the ETH collateral, to settle faults that are hard to judge.
2. AVSs, operators and slashing
A service protected by restaking is called an AVS (actively validated service). Stakers delegate collateral to operators, the people who run the servers, and operators run the AVS software. If an operator breaks the rules, slashing (confiscation) cuts the delegated collateral, and this feature went live on mainnet in April 2025.
EIGEN carries an idea called ‘intersubjective staking’. Faults that cannot be proven mathematically, such as deliberately withholding data, must be judged by consensus among people, and EIGEN holders who think a verdict is wrong could fork the token in response. The design is largely a concept, so how well it works remains to be seen.
3. Uses and milestones
Its flagship service is EigenDA, a data availability service that stores rollup data cheaply. In June 2025 Eigen Labs launched EigenCloud, bundling EigenDA (data), EigenVerify (dispute resolution) and EigenCompute (execution) so ordinary web apps can gain blockchain-grade verifiability. EigenAI and EigenCompute, aimed at verifying AI inference, followed in October 2025.
Timeline: restaking began in June 2023, EIGEN transfers and the first airdrop in September 2024, slashing in April 2025, EigenCloud in June 2025 and a staff cut of about a quarter in July 2025. Venture firm a16z crypto bought more EIGEN around then, backing the pivot.
4. Things to know
Reusing collateral across services overlaps risks too. An AVS bug or operator misconduct can trigger slashing and cost delegators ETH, and smart contract bugs and delegation piling onto a few operators are concerns. Rivals such as Symbiotic and Karak exist.
The 2024 airdrop terms drew criticism, including that users in the US and some other regions were excluded. Eigen Labs shifted its focus to EigenCloud and cut staff, which some read as a sign that restaking alone had limits, and the new business is unproven. Scheduled releases of early investor and contributor tokens are also a supply variable.
