KOGE (48 Club Token): The Membership Coin of a BNB Chain DAO
A community DAO that runs validators and an MEV builder
KOGE is the governance and membership token of the 48 Club (formerly the BNB48 Club), a community organization active on BNB Chain. The club presents itself as a DAO (decentralized autonomous organization) that runs block-related services and makes angel investments.
1. What it is and who runs it
The 48 Club is described as growing out of a community of BNB holders and builders, and now operates as a DAO, where token holders vote on decisions. It stresses that KOGE holders, not a single company, decide its finances and direction, and lists research, angel investing, product development and community management as its work. It is known as one of the longer-running groups on BNB Chain, the EVM-compatible blockchain created by Binance.
KOGE is a BEP-20 token (BNB Chain’s standard token format), so it has no blockchain of its own and relies on BNB Chain’s validators for security. On the Crypto Nation map, KOGE stands in BNB Chain City, because it is issued on BNB Chain. Its total supply is reported to be fixed at roughly 3.4 million tokens.
2. What KOGE does
KOGE’s basic use is voting. Holders vote on the club’s treasury and on how its services are run, and holding it is said to bring benefits such as gas-free transactions (gas is the fee for each transaction) and cash-back.
According to a summary of project documents, submitting a proposal requires an NFT (a unique digital token) called a ‘48er’, and minting one means burning KOGE. Later mints burn more than the first, so supply shrinks as the system is used. The token contract also lets holders burn their own tokens.
3. Uses and milestones
The club also runs real BNB Chain infrastructure: a validator (a node that produces and confirms blocks), an MEV builder called Puissant (a service that orders transactions into blocks) and a privacy RPC (the gateway wallets use to reach the chain) that guards against front-running. MEV is profit that block producers make by reordering transactions, as in ‘sandwich’ attacks that leave ordinary users with worse prices.
Project material also says the club has made angel investments in BNB Chain projects. Sources disagree on the token’s launch, giving September 2020 in one case and late 2021 in another, so official documents should settle it. BNB Chain itself opened in September 2020 as Binance Smart Chain and took its current name in 2022.
4. Things to know
Tokens with a small supply can be swayed by a few large holders, in price and in votes, and prices can swing widely when trading is thin. Benefits and burn rules can be changed by DAO vote, so today’s description may not hold.
Having a few organizations run builders and validators feeds the debate about BNB Chain’s decentralization, and users can hardly check how a builder orders transactions. Most information on KOGE comes from third-party write-ups, which conflict in places. The DAO’s legal status and the transparency of its investments also need checking.
