Bitcoin is the first cryptocurrency, started in January 2009 by a developer (or group) using the name Satoshi Nakamoto. Miners around the world compete in computation (proof of work) to make a block about every ten minutes, and the number of new coins halves about every four years, so there will never be more than 21 million.

Its smart contracts are simple, but since around 2023 tokens and collectibles have been created on top of Bitcoin with methods such as Ordinals and Runes, and sidechains and L2s connected to Bitcoin have grown. Those tokens stand around the BTC tower — the tallest building in the nation.
