THORChain (RUNE): Swapping Native Coins Without Wrapped Tokens
Cross-chain swaps with RUNE at the center of every pool
THORChain is a decentralized network for swapping coins of different blockchains, such as Bitcoin and Ethereum, directly and without ‘wrapped’ tokens (copies made for another chain). Its own coin, RUNE, is the middle step in every swap and the deposit securing the network.
1. What it is and who builds it
THORChain is its own blockchain, built with the Cosmos SDK (a blockchain toolkit) to swap the original coins of different chains without a central exchange. Validator-node operators, not a company, keep it running, while early development was led by teams such as Nine Realms. RUNE began as a token on Ethereum and Binance’s chain before becoming THORChain’s own coin, and the multi-chain network went live in 2021.
RUNE’s maximum supply was originally 500 million and has since been reduced by burning. On the Crypto Nation map, RUNE is the city-hall tower of the THORChain neighbourhood in Mainnet Province, because it is the chain’s own coin.
2. Liquidity pools with RUNE in the middle
THORChain’s ‘continuous liquidity pools’ each hold equal values of RUNE and one outside coin, such as Bitcoin. To swap Bitcoin for ether, the network trades Bitcoin for RUNE in one pool and RUNE for ether in another, in a single step. Since every pool pairs with RUNE, original coins change hands without wrapped tokens or a centralized bridge.
Each chain’s assets sit in shared vaults that open only when several nodes combine signature shares. Nodes normally post RUNE worth more than the assets they guard as a bond, which misbehaviour cuts. So RUNE is the middle asset in swaps, the nodes’ deposit and the governance vote.
3. Uses and milestones
It handles swaps between chains such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, BNB Chain, Avalanche and Dogecoin. Several wallets and routing apps use it behind the scenes, much like a swap engine other apps borrow.
Its Q1 2026 report says Solana support went live, so SOL can be swapped without wrapping. Groundwork for Polygon, Cardano, Sui and Zcash is under way, and a proposal to burn reserve-held RUNE, cutting total supply to about 360 million, is under discussion. Nine Realms is gradually stepping back as responsibilities pass to independent teams.
4. Things to know
In January 2025, as RUNE’s price diverged sharply from Bitcoin and Ether, doubts grew about THORFi, its savings and lending features, and nodes voted to pause them. In February about two-thirds of nodes approved a wind-down in which liabilities of roughly 200 million dollars would be repaid with a compensation token, TCY. That month, analysts also said North Korea-linked hackers laundered funds stolen from the exchange Bybit through THORChain, sparking debate over a network no one can switch off.
With no operator in charge, node bonds in RUNE are the pillar of security, so a sharp fall in RUNE’s price can weaken it. Attacks on code flaws drained funds in July 2021, and each new chain raises the need for careful review. Responsibility is moving from one team to several, so governance is still in transition.
