Terra Classic (LUNC): The Fallen Terra Chain, Run by Its Community
What remained after Terra’s 2022 collapse
LUNC is the original coin of the Terra blockchain that collapsed in May 2022. It was named ‘Classic’ to tell it apart from the new Terra chain created afterwards, and a community now keeps its development and operation going.
1. Terra’s collapse and the ‘Classic’ name
Terra was built by Terraform Labs, founded in 2018 by Do Kwon and a partner, with a coin, LUNA, and UST, a dollar-pegged ‘algorithmic’ stablecoin. UST held its price through exchange rules with LUNA rather than collateral. In May 2022 UST fell below a dollar, LUNA collapsed in a chain reaction, and tens of billions of dollars in value disappeared.
A new Terra chain with a new LUNA launched on 28 May 2022, and the original chain became Terra Classic, with its coin renamed LUNC and UST renamed USTC. On the Crypto Nation map, LUNC is the city-hall tower of the Terra Classic neighbourhood in Mainnet Province, because it is that chain’s own coin.
2. A community-run Cosmos-based chain
Terra Classic is a proof-of-stake chain built with the Cosmos SDK (a toolkit for building blockchains). Validators (operators who stake coins and confirm blocks) and developers decide upgrades by governance votes. Since the collapse no single company is in charge; volunteer developers and validators lead.
LUNC’s supply is in the trillions, so the community has focused on reducing it. A key tool was an on-chain ‘burn tax’ adopted by vote, which destroys a share of each transaction, and Binance has run a program that burns LUNC using part of its trading fees. Exchanges also backed an upgrade that stopped burned coins from being minted again.
3. Uses and what came after
LUNC is used for fees, staking and governance votes on the chain, and small DeFi services run on top of it. The scale is far smaller than before the collapse.
Reports say governance-approved upgrades and security patches continued in 2026. Do Kwon pleaded guilty to fraud charges in the US in August 2025 and was sentenced on 11 December 2025 to 15 years, with prosecutors agreeing he may serve the second half in South Korea.
4. Things to know
The biggest risk is the coin’s history. In 2024 a US jury found Terraform Labs and Do Kwon liable for defrauding investors, and the company went through bankruptcy proceedings. LUNC is the chain that remained after that collapse and still carries the reputational burden.
With such a vast supply, burns have structural limits, and talk of burn totals does not by itself mean a rise in value. Proposals to peg USTC to the dollar again are discussed, though the risks of algorithmic stablecoins have already been shown. Reliance on volunteer developers and few validators is also cited as a risk.
