Render (RENDER): Sharing Idle GPUs to Render 3D Graphics
A decentralized GPU market conceived by OTOY’s Jules Urbach
Render Network is a decentralized network that spreads rendering, the work of turning 3D scenes into finished images and video, across GPU owners worldwide. The RENDER token pays for jobs and rewards those who supply graphics processing power.
1. Who built it
Render was conceived by Jules Urbach, founder of the cloud graphics company OTOY, known for OctaneRender, a GPU renderer used in film, advertising and games. Urbach linked the idea of using idle GPUs for costly rendering jobs to a blockchain.
The token was first issued as RNDR, an ERC-20 token on Ethereum, after a 2017 token sale, and the network opened to the public in 2020. After a community proposal it moved to Solana in November 2023 as RENDER, and the Render Network Foundation now oversees governance. On the Crypto Nation map, RENDER stands in Ethereum City (the capital), where it was first issued.
2. How it works
Creators upload 3D scene files and pay for the work, and node operators with GPUs process pieces of the job and return the results. The network tracks operators’ job history and reputation so that reliable nodes get more work.
Its token economy follows a burn-and-mint equilibrium (BME). When a creator pays a dollar-denominated job price, the equivalent RENDER is burned, while node operators receive newly minted RENDER on a set schedule. Rising use means more burning, and falling use can mean issuance exceeds burns.
3. Where it is used
Centered on OctaneRender, the network has served motion graphics, 3D animation and architectural visualization, gradually adding more render engines and tools. A commonly cited benefit is that independent artists and small studios can tap many GPUs without buying expensive hardware.
More recently, community votes approved proposals to extend the network to general GPU computing such as AI and machine learning. Render is therefore often grouped with both AI projects and DePIN, decentralized physical infrastructure networks that pool real-world computing resources.
4. Things to know
Render has relied heavily on OTOY and its founder for technology and direction, so how independently its foundation-led governance works is a key question. Big cloud providers and other decentralized GPU networks compete in the same market.
Under BME, weaker demand can mean more tokens minted than burned. The move from RNDR on Ethereum to RENDER on Solana also left legacy and bridged versions of the token in circulation, so it is worth checking which chain and contract a token is on.
