Morpho (MORPHO): Isolated Lending Markets and Curated Vaults
Governance token of a lending protocol from a French team
Morpho is a decentralized lending protocol on which anyone can create a lending market, and MORPHO is the governance token that steers it. It isolates risk market by market and lets professional ‘curators’ spread deposits across markets.
1. Who built it
Morpho was developed by Paris-based Morpho Labs, led by co-founder Paul Frambot. It began as the Morpho Optimizer, a layer on top of Aave and Compound that matched lenders and borrowers directly to improve rates for both.
In January 2024 the team launched Morpho Blue, a standalone lending design that became the core of today’s protocol. MORPHO became transferable in November 2024, and in 2025 Morpho Labs became a subsidiary of the nonprofit Morpho Association, aligning interests around the token rather than company shares. On the Crypto Nation map, MORPHO stands in Ethereum City (the capital), where it was first issued.
2. How it works
Each market is defined by five settings: the loan asset, the collateral asset, the oracle that supplies prices, the liquidation loan-to-value ratio (LLTV) and the interest rate model. Anyone can create a market, and risk stays isolated so trouble in one market does not spread. The core contracts are immutable, meaning they cannot be changed once deployed.
Depositors can instead use Morpho Vaults, run by risk-management firms called curators, such as Gauntlet and Steakhouse, which allocate deposits across markets under stated rules. MORPHO holders vote on matters such as which interest rate models and LLTV levels are allowed and on fee settings.
3. Where it is used
Morpho runs on Ethereum, Base and other chains and often serves as back-end infrastructure for other services. In January 2025, for example, Coinbase launched loans on its Base network that let users borrow USDC against bitcoin, with Morpho working behind the scenes.
In June 2025 the team unveiled Morpho V2, aimed at fixed-rate, fixed-term loans. Users state the terms they want and are matched with counterparties, an intent-based approach meant to bring mostly variable-rate DeFi lending closer to traditional loans.
4. Things to know
Open market creation means some markets may use risky collateral or weak oracles, and vault safety depends heavily on curators. In November 2025, when outside yield-bearing stablecoins such as Stream Finance’s xUSD collapsed, several DeFi lending vaults that had accepted them as collateral took losses.
Immutable code limits the risk of administrators changing the rules, but if a flaw is found, users must migrate to a new version. When nearly all of a market’s funds are lent out, depositors may not be able to withdraw at once. How MORPHO links to protocol revenue may also change through governance.
