Injective (INJ): A Finance-First Chain Born as an Ethereum Token
Order books and derivatives built into the chain itself
Injective is a layer-1 blockchain (an independent chain) that builds finance features such as exchange order books and derivatives into the chain itself. INJ is its own coin, but it began life as an ERC-20 token on Ethereum.
1. Born on Ethereum, then given a chain of its own
Injective grew out of Injective Labs, co-founded by Eric Chen and Albert Chon, and passed through the Binance Labs incubator. INJ was first offered in 2020 through Binance Launchpad as an ERC-20 token on Ethereum, and it became the chain’s own coin when Injective’s mainnet (the live network) opened in November 2021.
On the Crypto Nation map, INJ stands in Ethereum City (the capital). It is now Injective’s own coin, but Ethereum is where it was first issued.
2. Finance built into the chain
Injective is a proof-of-stake chain built with the Cosmos SDK (a toolkit for making blockchains), where validators lock up INJ to produce blocks. On most smart-contract chains developers must build an exchange from scratch, but Injective supplies an order book (a list of buy and sell prices) and trade settlement as built-in modules that many apps share. It matches orders in ‘batch auctions’ collected over a short interval, which aims to reduce traders jumping ahead of others.
INJ is used for fees, collateral, staking and governance, with a maximum supply set at 100 million. Part of app fees is used to burn INJ (remove it permanently). The burn began as a weekly auction and in 2025 became a monthly ‘Community BuyBack’, in which participants burn INJ in return for a share of ecosystem revenue.
3. Where it is used, and what happened
Exchanges such as Helix offer spot and futures trading on Injective, and prediction markets and tokenized real-world assets (RWA) also run there. In 2024 came ‘inEVM’, an Ethereum Virtual Machine environment, and the Volan upgrade added an RWA module. In 2025 a native EVM mainnet launched with more than 30 apps, letting Ethereum-style apps and existing ones share state.
2025 also brought pre-IPO perpetual futures (contracts with no expiry) tracking private companies and a market following GPU compute, while Chainlink was adopted as the preferred oracle (price feed). That year Canary Capital filed with the US SEC for an exchange-traded fund (ETF) holding staked INJ, and the fintech firm Revolut began to support INJ trading and staking.
4. Things to know
Injective’s focus is high-risk derivatives, where leverage (trading with borrowed money) can cause large losses, and products that mimic private companies or stocks may run into securities rules in various countries. It also competes for users with rival chains that specialize in trading.
Block production can concentrate among a few validators, and reliance on bridges to move assets from other chains carries security risk. The burn design only shrinks supply if real usage continues, and an ETF filing says nothing about a coin’s safety.
