Falcon USD: an overcollateralized dollar minted from many assets
From stablecoins to tokenized stocks: what backs USDf
Falcon USD (USDf) is a synthetic dollar issued by Falcon Finance and designed to stay at $1 by minting less than the collateral deposited. It promises dollar liquidity without selling one’s assets.
1. Who is behind it
Falcon Finance was incubated by DWF Labs, a crypto investment and market-making firm, and is led by DWF managing partner Andrei Grachev. It bills itself as ‘universal collateralization infrastructure’. After a closed beta in early 2025, USDf opened to the public on April 30, 2025.
USDf was first issued on Ethereum and later expanded to networks such as BNB Chain. In July 2025 Falcon announced an investment from World Liberty Financial, a venture linked to the Trump family. On the Crypto Nation map, USDf stands in Ethereum City (the capital), as it was first issued on Ethereum.
2. How USDf is minted
Stablecoins such as USDC or USDT mint USDf one-to-one, while bitcoin, ether and other coins require extra collateral set by an overcollateralization ratio (OCR). An ‘Innovative Mint’ option locks collateral for a fixed term with preset price conditions. Direct minting and redemption require identity checks (KYC), and withdrawing redeemed assets involves a seven-day cooldown.
Staking USDf yields sUSDf, a token that grows in value against USDf over time. Falcon says returns come from market-neutral strategies such as funding-rate and basis arbitrage, cross-exchange trades and staking rewards. Collateral is spread across exchanges and custodians and hedged to hold USDf near $1.
3. Milestones
On July 8, 2025, USDf briefly slipped below $1 amid questions about collateral and transparency, then recovered. Falcon later added a transparency page, weekly reserve checks by HT Digital and quarterly ISAE 3000 assurance reports from accounting firm Harris & Trotter; the October 1, 2025 report said reserves exceeded liabilities.
In October 2025 Falcon added tokenized gold such as Tether Gold (XAUt) and tokenized stocks such as Backed’s xStocks as collateral. Its governance token FF launched at the end of September 2025. USDf is now backed by a mix of crypto and real-world asset (RWA) tokens.
4. Things to know
USDf is not guaranteed one-to-one by bank deposits; collateral and trading strategies hold its value. In May 2025 risk analyst LlamaRisk flagged Falcon’s unilateral control of reserves and thin disclosure, and critics questioned illiquid altcoin collateral. Falcon replied that most collateral was stablecoins and bitcoin, managed only with market-neutral strategies.
Problems at exchanges, custodians or in hedging could cause losses or a depeg. Its close ties to DWF Labs also matter: in May 2024 the Wall Street Journal reported market-manipulation allegations against DWF Labs, which the firm denied. KYC and the withdrawal cooldown can also slow redemptions in a hurry.
