Dogecoin: The Joke Coin That Became the Best-Known Meme Coin

From a 2013 Shiba Inu joke to a proof-of-work payment coin

Dogecoin (DOGE) began in 2013 as a joke built on the ‘Doge’ Shiba Inu meme. With no grand plan, it became the best-known meme coin, a coin born from internet culture.

1. A joke between two developers

Software engineers Billy Markus in the US and Jackson Palmer in Australia launched Dogecoin in December 2013, partly to poke fun at the flood of speculative coins. Its face is Kabosu, the Japanese Shiba Inu behind the Doge meme, who died in May 2024 but remains the coin’s symbol.

No company or CEO runs Dogecoin. Volunteers and the Dogecoin Foundation, revived in 2021, maintain the software; both founders left early, and Palmer later became a critic of the crypto industry. On the Crypto Nation map, DOGE is the city-hall tower of Dogecoin City, as that chain’s own coin.

2. Litecoin roots, endless issuance

Dogecoin is built on Litecoin-family code and uses proof of work (computers competing to make blocks) with the Scrypt algorithm. Blocks arrive about every minute, against Bitcoin’s ten. Since 2014 it has been ‘merge-mined’ with Litecoin: the same work secures both coins.

Its supply rules are unusual. A planned cap of 100 billion coins was dropped in 2014, and since 2015 every block has paid a fixed 10,000 DOGE. So there is no maximum supply: about 5 billion new coins appear each year, a share of the total that slowly shrinks as supply grows. Hence it is pitched less as a scarce asset than as money for tips and small payments.

3. From tipping to ETFs

Early Dogecoin was loved for online tipping, small payments to reward good posts. In 2014 its community raised money to send the Jamaican bobsleigh team to the Sochi Winter Olympics and to build clean-water wells in Kenya. In 2021, repeated comments by Elon Musk and a social-media frenzy made it a household name.

Today some payment services and merchants, including Tesla for some merchandise, accept DOGE, and the foundation builds tools that let apps add Dogecoin support. In late 2025 the first US-listed exchange-traded funds holding Dogecoin appeared. The US government’s ‘Department of Government Efficiency’ shared the DOGE name in 2025 but has no official link to the coin.

4. Things to know

Dogecoin’s price has a long history of swinging on celebrity remarks and social-media mood, as in the boom and bust of 2021. Its unlimited supply means new coins keep arriving, and a large share sits in a few addresses, many of them exchange wallets.

It offers few features beyond payments, such as smart contracts, and development relies on a small group of volunteers, so change is slow. Much of its security depends on merge-mining with Litecoin, and community attention is widely seen as a bigger driver of its value than technology.
