Derive (DRV): The Onchain Options Exchange Formerly Called Lyra

In October 2026 V3 retired its own L2 for Ethereum custody

Derive (DRV) is the governance token of the onchain options and futures exchange Derive, which was called Lyra until 2024. In October 2026 its V3 retired its own L2 chain and moved user funds into contracts on Ethereum.

1. From Lyra to Derive

Derive began around 2021 as Lyra, an options protocol on Optimism. An option is a right to buy or sell at a set price, and Lyra aimed to offer it as a wallet-only onchain service. The name ‘Derive’ first appeared officially in a DAO proposal in September 2024, and the exchange later widened to perpetual futures and spot.

DRV arrived in late 2024 as a 1:1 swap for the LYRA token, issued on Ethereum mainnet. Its maximum supply is 1 billion, the same as LYRA, with no new tokens to be minted, according to the proposal. On the Crypto Nation map, DRV stands in Ethereum City, because it was first issued on Ethereum.

2. Offchain matching and ZK proofs

Derive matches orders quickly on servers while custody and settlement happen on a blockchain. Before V3, its own L2, Derive Chain, built with Optimism’s OP Stack toolkit, did that job, with trade data posted to Celestia.

V3 calls itself a ‘zkVM exchange’. User funds sit in Ethereum layer-1 contracts, and ZK proofs (mathematical proofs of correctness) verified on Ethereum check margin and settlement. Data still goes to Celestia, and order matching is still run by servers that Derive operates.

3. Uses and milestones

Derive is mainly used to trade options and futures on assets such as ETH and BTC. V3 lets ETH and BTC serve together as margin, widens borrowing beyond USDC to ETH, WBTC and HYPE (Hyperliquid’s token), and lets builders create fee-earning vaults without code. Markets are split into isolated risk groups.

Key dates: the rename in September 2024, DRV in late 2024, the V3 proposal on 14 September 2026, migration completed on 6 October 2026 and V3 announced as live the next day. Derive Chain began winding down, with balances and positions carried over automatically. Staked DRV becomes stDRV, which carries votes.

4. Things to know

Options and futures are complex derivatives; beginners may struggle to understand them, and losses can be large in a short time, with positions force-closed (liquidated) if collateral runs short. The app is closed to US persons, and derivatives rules differ by country.

V3 moved custody to Ethereum contracts, but order matching and the exchange API depend on servers run by the Derive team. The new ZK design and the large migration have a short track record. The old chain was one the monitoring site L2BEAT flagged for high risks such as a centralized sequencer.
