Curve DAO Token (CRV): The Vote-Lock Token of a Stablecoin DEX
The governance token of Curve, known for veCRV vote-locking
CRV is the governance (decision-making) token of Curve Finance, a decentralized exchange that swaps similarly priced coins cheaply. Locking CRV for a set time creates voting power (veCRV), and those votes decide which trading pools receive rewards, a structure Curve made well known.
1. A token for an exchange built for stablecoins
Curve Finance is a decentralized exchange (DEX) created by developer Michael Egorov. It specializes in swapping coins of similar value, such as stablecoins, in large sizes with little price movement. Users deposit coins into liquidity pools that act as the counterparty to trades, and depositors share the trading fees.
CRV is the token of the decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) that runs Curve, and it began distribution in August 2020. Its maximum supply is designed at about 3.03 billion, with new issuance shrinking each year. On the Crypto Nation map, CRV stands in Ethereum City (the capital), because it was first issued on Ethereum.
2. Locking CRV for voting power
Locking CRV for up to four years yields veCRV (vote-escrowed CRV). Longer locks give more voting power, and veCRV cannot be transferred and shrinks as time passes. The design aims to give more say to long-term participants than to short-term traders.
veCRV holders vote weekly on how newly issued CRV is split among pools, receive part of the trading fees, and can raise their liquidity-provider rewards by up to 2.5 times (a boost). Projects wanting rewards therefore gather veCRV or pay for votes, a contest known as the ‘Curve Wars’.
3. Uses and milestones
CRV is used for governance votes, for fee and reward benefits through veCRV, and as collateral in several DeFi services. Curve opened its first pools in early 2020 and added V2 pools for volatile assets in 2021. Other exchanges, such as Aerodrome, have adapted its vote-locking idea.
In May 2023 Curve launched crvUSD, a dollar-pegged stablecoin created by borrowing against collateral, followed by the lending service LlamaLend. On 10 June 2026 LlamaLend V2 went live, first on the Ethereum layer 2 Optimism, letting more asset pairs form isolated markets. Curve also describes Yield Basis, a later project by the same founder, as borrowing crvUSD.
4. Things to know
In July 2023 a compiler flaw (a bug in a code-translation tool) let attackers drain several pools, and the founder’s large CRV-backed loans then risked liquidation, unsettling the market. After the October 2025 crash, some lenders in a LlamaLend market using CRV as collateral had impaired claims, and from May 2026 Curve set up a recovery pool where those lenders can swap their claims for crvUSD at market prices.
Although new issuance is designed to shrink, a growing circulating supply can add selling pressure, and voting power can concentrate among large holders or the protocols that gather veCRV. Competition from other exchanges and the constant risk of smart contract bugs also apply.
