Chainlink (LINK): The Oracle Network Linking Blockchains to Data

From price feeds to CCIP and CRE, since a 2017 token sale

Chainlink is an oracle network that lets blockchain smart contracts safely use outside data such as prices and communicate across chains. LINK is the token used to pay for its services and to back its node operators.

1. What it is and who built it

Chainlink grew out of SmartContract.com, founded by Sergey Nazarov and Steve Ellis. A 2017 white paper set out the idea of a decentralized oracle network, a token sale in September 2017 raised its funds, and the mainnet opened on Ethereum in May 2019. Chainlink Labs is the main developer, while independent node operators provide the services.

LINK is an ERC-677 token on Ethereum (ERC-20 with the ability to send data along with a transfer), and its total supply is 1 billion. On the Crypto Nation map, LINK stands in Ethereum City (the capital), because it was issued on Ethereum. The same services are now offered on many other blockchains.

2. How the oracle network works

Blockchains cannot check outside data themselves, so a lending app needs an oracle to know what collateral is worth. Chainlink avoids relying on one server: several independent nodes fetch the data, their values are combined into one, such as a median, and posted to the smart contract. Nodes are paid fees for the service.

Beyond price data feeds, the services include VRF for verifiable randomness, Automation for running tasks when conditions are met, CCIP (Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol) for moving tokens and messages between chains, and low-latency Data Streams. A newer toolkit, the Chainlink Runtime Environment (CRE), lets developers chain these services into workflows.

3. Uses and milestones

The oldest use is feeding prices to DeFi lending, derivatives and stablecoin apps. Lately banks and asset managers use it to settle tokenized funds and bonds, and Chainlink’s Q1 2026 report cited a tokenized fund from Amundi and Spiko, a cross-border settlement trial by Visa, ANZ, ChinaAMC and Fidelity International, and Robinhood’s choice of Chainlink as the oracle for Robinhood Chain.

In August 2025 the US Department of Commerce said it would publish economic data such as GDP on blockchains using Chainlink and Pyth, and the same month the Chainlink Reserve began setting aside LINK bought with part of its revenue. On 2 December 2025 Grayscale’s Chainlink Trust ETF (GLNK) listed on NYSE Arca.

4. Things to know

Oracles are a critical dependency in DeFi, where a wrong price can trigger mass liquidations or attacks, and Chainlink has been criticized for some centralization in node selection, data sources and upgrades. Staking, in which nodes lock up LINK as a guarantee, opened in stages from late 2022 but with limits, so the amount it protects is bounded.

The company and ecosystem programs hold a large share of LINK, and how token value links to service fees and usage is still debated. Rival oracles such as Pyth and in-house data services of banks and exchanges compete. Many bank partnerships are pilots or announcements, so real commercial scale needs separate checking.
