City guide · 🏙️ Capital region (L2)
L2 Suburbs
A small town next to the capital where Ethereum L2s with only a few coins live together.

| Moving out | A chain with four or more coins gets its own city |
There are dozens of Ethereum L2s, but for many of them only a handful of the top 1,000 coins were first issued there. Instead of each getting a city, those L2s share one small town next to the capital.
Coins from chains that record on Ethereum — such as Optimism (OP Mainnet), Linea, World Chain, MegaETH and Taiko — gather here. When one chain reaches four coins, it moves out into a city of its own.
📰 The story of this city: The L2 Suburbs: Small Rollups Growing Beside Ethereum
The L2 Suburbs is the neighborhood of small layer-2 (L2) chains running on top of Ethereum: OP Mainnet, Linea, World Chain, MegaETH, Taiko, Zora and Manta. Each tries to be a faster, cheaper extension of Ethereum.
Ethereum’s extensions, called L2s
Ethereum’s main chain (layer 1) slows down and gets costly when busy, so extensions were needed. A layer 2 (L2) processes transactions on top of Ethereum and writes only the results back. The best-known design, the ‘rollup’, bundles many transactions for low fees and high speed, while Ethereum keeps security and final settlement.
On the Crypto Nation map, the L2 Suburbs are small neighborhoods in the capital region beside Ethereum City; the big L2s Base and Arbitrum One have cities of their own. The token representing each L2, such as OP, LINEA or WLD, is its city-hall tower, with tokens first issued on that chain around it.
Two kinds of rollups, seven neighborhoods
Rollups differ in how they prove transactions are valid. Optimistic rollups assume transactions are correct and leave a challenge period to catch errors; ZK rollups use zero-knowledge proofs, mathematical proofs of correctness. OP Mainnet, World Chain and Zora use Optimism’s OP Stack toolkit, while Linea is a ZK rollup.
Linea comes from Ethereum software company Consensys, and World Chain, from World (formerly Worldcoin), favors verified humans. MegaETH aims for ‘real-time’ speed with very short blocks. Taiko calls itself a ‘based rollup’, where Ethereum’s side orders transactions. Zora serves creator apps, and Manta Pacific started with Celestia storing its data.
Uses and milestones
L2s got cheaper after Ethereum’s Dencun upgrade in March 2024 created ‘blobs’, low-cost space for L2 data, and the Fusaka upgrade in December 2025 opened the way to widen it. Small payments, games and social apps have moved to L2s.
Linea’s mainnet opened in July 2023, Taiko’s in May 2024, World Chain’s in 2024 and MegaETH’s on 9 February 2026; Linea’s token followed in September 2025. OP Mainnet anchors the ‘Superchain’ idea of chains sharing tools, and OP was airdropped in May 2022. Around 2025 small L2s such as Kroma and Kinto shut down.
Things to know
L2s borrow Ethereum’s security, but not all are equally safe. Most small L2s have one team running the sequencer (the server that orders transactions) and a few people holding upgrade keys, so a halted sequencer can stall the chain. Monitoring sites such as L2BEAT grade decentralization in stages from 0 to 2.
Users and apps crowd onto the biggest L2s, so small ones risk fading or closing. L2 fees are often paid in ETH, leaving tokens with governance and reward roles, and unlock schedules can add selling pressure. Bridges (asset-transfer services) are frequent hacking targets.
