Jupiter (JUP): Solana’s Best-Price Finder Turned Super App

From DEX aggregator to super app, with a DAO in transition

Jupiter began as a DEX aggregator on Solana, a service that searches many exchanges at once to find the best price for a swap, and has grown into futures, lending and a stablecoin. JUP is the governance token used to vote on its direction.

1. From Solana’s price-comparison engine to a super app

Jupiter was started in 2021 by a team that includes a pseudonymous co-founder known as ‘Meow’. It gathers liquidity scattered across Solana exchanges such as Raydium, Orca and Meteora and routes each trade along the best path, much as a flight-comparison site shows many airlines at once. It later added limit orders, recurring purchases (DCA), futures trading and lending, and now calls itself a ‘super app’.

JUP was first distributed on 31 January 2024 through a free airdrop to Solana users called ‘Jupuary’, with a total supply that began at 10 billion. On the Crypto Nation map, JUP stands in Solana City, because Solana is where the coin was first issued.

2. Route finding, the JLP pool and lending

When a swap is requested, Jupiter combines pools across exchanges and calculates the route with the least slippage (how far your own trade moves the price against you). Large orders are split across routes, and the user signs once. In futures trading a pool called JLP acts as the counterparty: holders earn fees but absorb traders’ gains and losses.

In 2025 it opened a lending service, Jupiter Lend, built on the design of the Ethereum-side DeFi project Fluid, where users can deposit assets and borrow against them. It has also launched its own stablecoin, jupUSD, to supply dollar-type assets inside its services.

3. Where it is used, and what happened

JUP was released under a plan to return much of the supply to users and the community. Staking JUP lets holders vote in the DAO (an organization run by token-holder votes) on the service’s direction and budget, and ‘Active Staking Rewards’ were paid quarterly to active voters. After airdrops in January 2024 and January 2025, the ‘final Jupuary’ in January 2026 was sharply reduced by a DAO vote.

In June 2025, amid community complaints of a ‘breakdown in trust’, the DAO paused all votes until early 2026 and said it would build a new framework. Earlier that year a proposal for new-staff salaries had passed despite backlash, fueling criticism that insiders steer decisions.

4. Things to know

The team and founders are reported to hold about 20% of the supply, and in one proposal a team wallet cast more than 4.5% of all ballots, drawing criticism of insider influence. Airdrop recipients often sell quickly, a known source of selling pressure.

Jupiter depends on Solana’s trading activity and moods such as meme-coin booms, and it carries smart-contract (self-running program) bugs and JLP counterparty risk. Rival aggregators and exchanges can offer the same service, so competition matters too.
