Decred (DCR): A Hybrid Blockchain Where Coin Holders Vote
A self-governing digital currency mixing PoW and PoS
DCR is the coin of Decred, an independent blockchain that combines proof of work and proof of stake. Launched in 2016, it lets coin holders decide rule changes and the use of shared funds by direct vote.
1. A self-governing currency from Bitcoin developers
Decred, short for ‘decentralized credit’, launched in February 2016 with Bitcoin developers such as Dave Collins, author of the btcd Bitcoin implementation, aiming to solve the governance (decision-making) problem. About 8% was pre-mined and went to the developers and early supporters, and there was no ICO (public coin sale).
DCR has a maximum supply of 21 million, the same as Bitcoin. On the Crypto Nation map, DCR stands in Payments Harbor, the area for payment-oriented coins, because it is classed as a payments coin.
2. Mixing proof of work and proof of stake
Blocks are produced by miners (proof of work: a computing contest), but a block counts only if stakers approve it. Holders lock DCR to buy ‘tickets’, five tickets are drawn at random for each block, and a majority must vote yes. This makes it hard for one party to control the chain with hash power alone; the project says the hybrid resists 51% attacks (rewriting the chain with majority power) better than pure PoW or PoS, which is its own claim.
Ticket holders earn part of the block reward for helping secure the chain, and use the same tickets to vote on rule changes and proposals. Ten percent of each block reward goes to a shared treasury, and holders vote on spending it on development and marketing. In 2023 votes approved BLAKE3 as the mining hash, a new difficulty method (ASERT) and a reward split of 1% for miners, 89% for stakers and 10% for the treasury.
3. Uses and key dates
DCR serves as a payment and store of value, and gives holders ticket purchases and votes. Decred’s site describes opt-in privacy (mixing that makes transactions harder to trace), a decentralized exchange with no trading fees that swaps coins directly through atomic swaps, and Lightning Network work, including the messaging service Bison Relay.
Key points: mainnet in February 2016; a 2021 vote enabling the decentralized treasury; a 2022 vote changing the reward split to 10/80/10; and the 2023 votes on BLAKE3, ASERT and the 1/89/10 split. Treasury money goes to developers, designers and researchers whose proposals holders approve.
4. Things to know
With miners now receiving 1% of the reward, their economic incentive is weaker, and the weight of security has shifted to holders who lock coins. Voting power can concentrate among large holders, and turnout may be limited.
Decred’s user base and app ecosystem are small compared with the major chains, and development depends heavily on treasury-funded proposals. Voting-based governance can be slow and leans on a few contributors, and coins with privacy features can face exchange-listing limits depending on regulation.
