Canton (CC): Native Coin of a Privacy Network for Finance
Digital Asset’s ‘network of networks’ for institutions
The Canton Network is a blockchain on which banks and other institutions can coordinate transactions while keeping their data private. Canton Coin (CC) pays for its shared connection service and is minted as rewards for those who run and build on it.
1. Who built it
Canton was developed by Digital Asset, a New York blockchain company that created Daml, a smart contract language for financial agreements, and the Canton protocol for keeping them in sync across organizations. In 2023 it unveiled the Canton Network with financial institutions and technology firms.
In July 2024 the Global Synchronizer, the network’s shared connection layer, went live, and Canton Coin launched with it. Its overseeing foundation, set up with Linux Foundation support, was renamed from the Global Synchronizer Foundation to the Canton Foundation in September 2025. On the Crypto Nation map, CC is the city-hall tower of Canton City.
2. A need-to-know ledger
On a typical public blockchain everyone sees the whole ledger, but on Canton each institution runs its own node and stores only the contracts it is party to. A synchronizer orders transactions between firms or apps while passing along encrypted messages it cannot read. Multi-asset trades can thus settle atomically, every leg or none, while staying confidential.
Independent organizations called Super Validators run the Global Synchronizer with Byzantine fault tolerant consensus, which survives some faulty or dishonest members and needs a two-thirds majority. CC launched with no pre-mine, presale or venture allocation. Dollar-priced fees are paid by burning CC, and new CC is minted as rewards for operators and app providers, a design called burn-mint equilibrium.
3. Where it is used
Canton has become a venue for tokenizing traditional assets such as government bonds and repurchase agreements (repos). In December 2025 DTCC, the US securities settlement giant, got an SEC no-action letter, an assurance that regulators would not object, and announced a test of tokenized US Treasuries on Canton.
On July 1, 2026, in a trade arranged through Tradeweb, Franklin Templeton swapped a tokenized Treasury with Virtu Financial for tokenized cash (USDCx), settling in real time on Canton. On July 15 DTCC ran its first live tokenized stock and Treasury trades on Canton and Hyperledger Besu, targeting a full commercial launch in October 2026.
4. Things to know
Canton calls itself a public network anyone can join, but its Super Validators are mostly financial institutions and related firms, and Digital Asset remains highly influential. Because transaction details are not public, outsiders find network activity harder to verify independently than on typical public chains.
CC’s role is tied to fees and rewards, so it depends on real institutional use. Many large pilots run within regulators’ limits and could change with the rules. Under the issuance schedule, reward shares for different participants also shift in stages over several years.
