Bonk (BONK): A Dog Meme Coin Dropped on Solana’s Community

A Solana meme token that began as a Christmas 2022 airdrop

Bonk (BONK) is a dog-themed meme coin (a coin built on internet culture) that anonymous Solana developers gave away free to Solana users on 25 December 2022. It came out to cheer up a gloomy Solana ecosystem and became one of its best-known meme coins.

1. A meme coin dropped on a community

Bonk was created by anonymous developers on 25 December 2022, with a Shiba Inu dog as its mascot. Solana’s mood was low after the collapse of the FTX exchange, and Bonk presented itself as the community’s own dog coin. About half the supply was airdropped (given away free) to Solana NFT users, artists, developers and DeFi users.

On the Crypto Nation map, BONK stands in Solana City, because it was first issued on Solana. It is a token on Solana rather than a coin with its own chain, so it uses Solana’s speed and low fees. Community came before any elaborate business plan, which sets it apart from ordinary project coins.

2. Services the community added

BONK follows Solana’s standard token format (SPL) and has no chain or complex technology of its own. Instead, community members built services around it: BonkBot, a Telegram trading bot, BonkSwap, a trading venue, and BonkDAO, which spends community funds by vote.

In April 2025 the meme-coin launchpad LetsBonk (bonk.fun) opened with Raydium, letting anyone create a new meme coin in a few clicks. A share of its fee income is reported to buy and burn BONK. A burn removes coins from circulation to cut supply, and a ‘BURNmas’ event in December 2024 also burned a large amount.

3. Uses and milestones

BONK is mostly traded and held within its community as a symbol of meme culture on Solana. Its value comes less from use than from identity and attention, as ‘the dog of Solana’s people’. Word of mouth from airdrop recipients drove early growth.

Key dates are the launch on 25 December 2022, the December 2024 burn event and LetsBonk in April 2025. In mid-2025 reports said LetsBonk briefly passed rival Pump.fun in daily token launches and volume, and some US-listed companies said they would hold BONK as a treasury asset.

4. Things to know

Meme coins have no earnings or assets behind them, and prices swing wildly with community excitement and market mood. The creators are anonymous, the coin leans heavily on Solana’s fortunes, and the LetsBonk fees behind burns depend on meme-coin fashion, so they are not steady.

In February 2025 US Securities and Exchange Commission staff said meme-coin trading is not a securities transaction, but that is a non-binding view, and fraud and manipulation are policed separately. Fake tokens impersonating popular meme coins are common, so check official contract addresses. Many newly launched meme coins soon stop trading.
